Calculate your TikTok engagement rate

TikTok engagement rate is measured against views, not followers — which is the opposite of Instagram and the reason most calculators give the wrong answer for this platform. Enter the numbers from a recent video.

The formula

TikTok engagement rate = ((likes + comments + shares) ÷ views) × 100

Two things differ from Instagram. TikTok divides by views rather than followers, because distribution here is per-video rather than per-audience. And shares are included, because sharing is one of the strongest signals TikTok's recommendation system weighs.

Some tools divide by followers to produce an account-level rate. That number is much higher and much less useful, since a video reaching a million non-followers has no meaningful relationship to your follower count.

Benchmarks

Engagement rate Reading
Under 4% The video reached people who kept scrolling
4% – 8% Below average, still functional
8% – 18% Healthy — normal for a video performing well
18% – 25% Very strong, typical of a genuinely viral video
Over 25% Implausible at scale — usually purchased engagement

TikTok rates run far higher than Instagram's because the denominator is views rather than followers, and views are people who actually saw the content. An 8% rate on TikTok is roughly comparable in health to a 3% rate on Instagram.

Which of the three matters most

They are not weighted equally by the recommendation system, and the ranking is worth knowing.

Shares carry the most weight. A share means someone found the video worth sending to a specific person, which is the strongest endorsement available. A share rate above about 1% of views is genuinely good.

Comments come next, because they take effort and often generate replies, which extend the video's active life.

Likes carry the least, because they cost nothing. They are the cheapest engagement to earn and the cheapest to buy, which is exactly why they are the weakest signal.

None of the three outranks watch-through and completion, which this calculator cannot measure because TikTok only exposes it in your own analytics. If your engagement rate looks healthy but the video is not being distributed, completion rate is where to look.

Spotting purchased engagement

Because TikTok publishes likes and views together on every video, the ratio between them is public in a way no other platform's is. Two patterns give a purchase away:

Like rate above 25% of views. The recommendation system does not selectively show videos only to people who will like them, so this ratio does not occur naturally at scale.

Like rate under 3% on a high-view video. The opposite tell — views that arrived without watch time behind them. This is the signature of impression-only purchased views, and it also drags down the completion rate that actually drives distribution.

Our guides to buying TikTok likes and buying TikTok views cover how to keep both ratios inside the plausible band.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good engagement rate on TikTok?

Between 8% and 18% of views is healthy for a video performing well. Above 18% is very strong. Above 25% is implausible at scale and usually indicates purchased engagement.

How do you calculate TikTok engagement rate?

Add likes, comments and shares, divide by views, multiply by 100. TikTok uses views as the denominator rather than followers, because distribution is per-video rather than per-audience.

Why is TikTok engagement rate higher than Instagram?

Because the denominator is different. TikTok divides by views — people who actually saw the video — while Instagram divides by followers, most of whom never see a given post. An 8% TikTok rate is roughly as healthy as a 3% Instagram rate.

Do shares count in TikTok engagement rate?

Yes, and they carry the most weight of the three. A share means someone sent the video to a specific person, which is the strongest endorsement signal available. A share rate above 1% of views is genuinely good.

What engagement rate do TikTok brands look for?

Most look for at least 4–6% on views, with anything in the 8–18% band treated as strong. What gets screened out is a rate below about 3%, which suggests views arriving without real interest behind them.

Does engagement rate affect TikTok's algorithm?

It contributes, but watch-through and completion rate matter more. A video with strong engagement and poor completion sends a mixed signal. Engagement rate is a useful diagnostic rather than the thing the system optimises for.

Can you calculate engagement rate by followers on TikTok?

You can, and some tools do, but it is misleading. A video reaching a million non-followers has no meaningful relationship to your follower count, so a follower-based rate on TikTok produces numbers that vary wildly for reasons unconnected to how the video performed.

A note on the benchmarks

These bands reflect commonly cited ranges across published social benchmarking studies and vary by niche and video length. Short videos generally show higher rates than long ones. Treat them as a working reference and weight your own historical average more heavily than any external figure.
